White House Joins Udall in Seeking Solution to Address Canceled Health Plans

Mark Udall welcomed the White House's efforts to allow Coloradans to keep their cancelled health insurance plans -- following Udall's introduction of the Continuous Coverage Act -- but believes more certainty is needed for Colorado families and again called for an extension of the open enrollment period. The White House's approach is a scaled-down version of Udall's proposed two-year solution.

"I am glad the White House is starting to address my concerns and those of thousands of Colorado families that received insurance cancellation notices," Udall said. "While I would prefer that these families receive a longer extension to keep their existing insurance policies and the greater certainty my legislation provides, I believe the president's announcement is a step in the right direction toward providing robust healthcare coverage for Coloradans. We also should build on this progress by giving Americans more time to enroll after the federal website is fully functional."

The Denver Post editorial page has called Udall's proposal to end cancellations a 'reasonable' solution.

Udall's Continuous Coverage Act follows his long-time effort to ensure the health care law works for Coloradans. He took Coloradans' concerns directly to the president last week and urged the president to extend the law's enrollment period nationally due to problems with HealthCare.gov. Udall also pressed the White House to ensure that the HealthCare.gov website can keep consumers' personal information secure.
